The name Richards has been synonymous with the Waste Management Industry for more than eighty years. In 1932, the original JJ Richards set up his business and commenced contracting in the Tweed area of northern New South Wales as JJ Richards & Sons. This firm still operates today and is one of the largest in the industry with major contracts in nearly all capital cities as well as many regional sites.
In 1958 a member of the original company, JR (Joe) Richards started his own company, JR Richards & Sons at Tuncurry which today operates widely throughout New South Wales. The company currently contracts to over twenty different Councils, serving large regional centres such as Taree, Port Macquarie, Grafton, Parkes, Dubbo and Orange. Overall the Company employs over 450 people with a fleet in excess of 250 heavy vehicles used in operations.
In addition to Waste Management, JR Richards and Sons have been to the forefront of engineering and design within the industry. A large engineering division is owned and operated at Tuncurry, manufacturing a wide range of compaction equipment for use in our vehicles.
JR Richards & Sons are also prominent in diverting waste from landfill. Our current recycling operations include kerbside collection services for over 20 Councils with four purpose built Material Recovery Facilities and we recover over 75,000 tonnes annually.
Organics collection and reprocessing to produce mulch and compost products is another area in which we continue to expand. We are passionate about our environment and are constantly looking at ways to minimise our footprint and achieve sustainability.

We have also extended our services to the mining industry with specialised equipment servicing the waste streams generated in this and associated fields. These aspects of our operations further exemplify the Richards Company’s ability to evolve and diversify to meet industry trends and satisfy market demands.
The firm JR Richards and Sons is truly a family Company with Joe’s children Ken, Joe Jnr and Sharyn, along with grandson Chris, all directly involved in management and operations. It is of interest to know that of the contracts currently held by the firm, 18 have been held for over 10 years with 4 in excess of 50 years. The basis of the company has always been service and stability and this will continue to be the case.
